October 29th & November 5th , 9:30am – 11:30am
Phillips Community Television, 3901 Chicago Ave. Mpls.
Nicola Pine, Saint Paul Neighborhood Network and
Deacon Warner, IFP
What is youth media, and how do youth grow and benefit from the process
of making media? In this workshop, youth media practitioners will
discuss the pedagogy of youth media and the outcomes that result from an
approach centered on youth development. Topics to be discussed include
experiential learning, critical media literacy, youth empowerment, and
service learning. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet local
youth media makers, view examples of their work, and hear directly from
them about their experiences in youth media.
INSTRUCTOR BIOS:
Nicola Pine is the Youth Programs Director at SPNN. Since 1996 she has been mentoring youth in video production and working to increase access and build visibility of youth media locally and nationally. She is a founding member of the Twin Cities Youth Media Network and is actively involved in the National Youth Media Access Project (a coalition of Access Centers around the country).
Deacon Warner has been involved in education for over 15 years--with ten years experience as a teacher in the Minneapolis Public Schools. Having integrated documentary video production into his social studies classes through the years, he now serves as Youth Program Coordinator for IFP MN, facilitating video projects in collaboration with classroom teachers in Minneapolis and St. Paul public schools.
Incorporating Youth Media into your Youth Program
Novemeber 12th and 19th , 9:30am – 11:30am
Phillips Community Television, 3901 Chicago Ave. Mpls.
John Gwinn, Phillips Community Television and
Andrea Lehmann, Saint Paul Neighborhood Network
This workshop will explore the possibility of integrating media
production into your existing youth program. We will look at a variety
of options from partnering with an existing youth media organization to
doing it on your own. Attendees will learn about a number of Twin
Cities youth media organizations. Information about equipment,
curriculum examples, and other resources will be provided, as well as
tips from experienced youth media practitioners on how to ensure your
project is a fun and engaging experience for the youth involved.
INSTRUCTOR BIOS:
John Gwinn received a B.S. in Film/Video from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1988 and is slowly pursuing a Masters Degree from the University of Minnesota in Youth Development Leadership. He co-founded Phillips Community Television (PCTV), a youth media program, fifteen years ago and currently directs the program. He has taught media production to youth at many Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota schools, and has produced videos for several local and national agencies and non-profit organizations.
Andrea Lehmann has experience in both youth development and media
production and in 2004, she merged these backgrounds by getting involved
in youth media. Currently, she loves her work developing and leading
three youth media programs at Saint Paul Neighborhood Network (SPNN).
